  After 9 months of arriving early with a perfect attendance record, no indication of faulty work, and working to the best of my abilities, I was laid off "for no reason." The City of Santa Cruz Public Works does not work. There primary job is to make it appear as if they are working and developing excuses for not being able to maintain the City infrastructure properly. Be weary of anything they might tell you; more time is spent developing stories and "feel-good" anecdotes about the job than actually doing their job. Millions of dollars are wasted every year because of poor design choices, lack of effort and an ineffective management. New appointees appear to be hired more to protect the jobs of supervisors (most of whom are over 65, don't care about their jobs or the environment (at all!!!) and wouldn't recognize any mistakes (because they've been making them for so long without any sort of governing). For the last 3 months of work, I was given zero new assignments, to try to bore me to leave. Quotes that supervisors told me while working here: "We make the rules" "We hate the County (of Santa Cruz)" "When you've been working here as long as I have, you can do whatever you want." "Your always complaining about not having enough to do" (after casually mentioning I was running low on work at one time) body).
